Meet Notes

March 29th, 2025 | 2 Courses: Line-O > 8-9:30am Starts, Traditional Orienteering > 9-11am Starts
Meet Director : Rick Oliver

For only a single donation to the Orienteering Utah club, Orienteers may participate in both events at The Iron County Three Peaks Recreation Area on March 29th!

Line-O

Line Orienteering starts anywhere from 8:00-9:30 am.  This event serves as a warmup and to improve Orienteering skills.   Line Orienteering requires participants to follow a specific, pre-determined route marked on their map and circling on their map checkpoints that are placed along that line. This type of Orienteering requires precise navigation to stay on course and not deviate too far from the designated route.

Key points about line orienteering:

  • Fixed route:

Unlike standard orienteering, the course in line orienteering is clearly defined on the map with a line indicating the exact path to follow.

  • Strict adherence:

Competitors need to stay as close as possible to the drawn line to successfully navigate the course and reach each checkpoint.

  • Focus on accuracy:

The emphasis is on precise map reading and following the marked route rather than choosing the fastest route.

Participants must circle on their map the location of all flags they find along their line orienteering course.  Their will be flags set up for three courses of  Easy, Moderate, and Hard technical difficulty.

Traditional Orienteering

Next participants can start anywhere from 9:00-11:00 am for the traditional cross-country orienteering with route choice options.  These orienteering courses will use only the disc golf platform locations marked clearly on terrain features throughout this very accurate map!  There will be four courses:

  • White/ Yellow ~3km long, suitable for beginners

  • Orange ~4km long, for intermediate orienteers

  • Green ~5km long, for advanced orienteers

  • Red ~7km long, for a longer advanced course

  • Blue 12kM Long, Longest for advanced orienteers

Each disc golf platform has a number and color associated with it on a prominent metal sign. Instead of punching, participants take a crayon to write down station numbers and colors for each point on their map.  Timing system will be done with a stopwatch and manually recorded.

Meet location will be near the Bulloch Pavilion in The Iron County Three Peaks Recreation Area. Registration will be onsite, day of the event.

Thank you,
